It’s hard to put into words what exactly a “well-rounded person” entails. Is it a life-long learner paired with a willingness to teach? Is it charisma paired with a serious-side? Is it a professional who dabbles in entrepreneurship in multiple different industries? If so, Dr. Buck Parker must be the total-encompassment of a well-rounded human being.
Earning his Bachelor of Science degree form University of Wyoming, Dr. Parker went on to pursue his medical degree at St. Matthews University School of Medicine. Dr. Parker then went on to specialize in general surgery at Henry Ford Hospital, a level 1 trauma center, where he trained in Trauma Surgery, Transplant Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Emergency Abdominal Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Endocrine Surgery, Surgical Oncology as well as Surgical Intensive Care. Furthering his education, Parker then pursued a research fellowship with NASA where he researched ultrasound and remote guidance in zero gravity environments.
With the workload of a trauma surgeon, one would be surprised to find out that Dr. Parker is no stranger to the limelight. In 2015, Parker was a contestant and medical expert on a survival show hosted by TV personality Bear Grylls on NBC called “The Island“, where he was one of 14 men put on a remote island to survive for 28 days. Along with this, Dr. Parker was also on NBC’s “The Proposal“.
As if being a general surgery resident wasn’t enough, Dr. Parker started a multi-million dollar business during residency. Through starting his own fitness website, Dr. Parker became an affiliate for the fitness company “P90X”. After perfecting his website and learning about marketing strategies in his little off-time, what was suppose to be his “side-hustle” blew up. His website listed 2nd on Google for the search term “P90X”.
In what could quite possibly be Dr. Parker’s greatest achievement, he has the innate ability to inspire. With a social media following of over one hundred thousand students, Dr. Parker has been able to teach, uplift, and inspire. After reflecting on the immense help he felt he received throughout his journey in medicine, he decided to take it upon himself to pay it back. He uses his platform to not only teach about medicine, but to speak to his audience about how to overcome the inevitable battles of life. Dr. Parker is not cut from the same mold as the stereotypical surgeon. In an attempt to be honest and true, Dr. Parker delivers raw, helpful and out-right motivating advice for his viewers. In the words of W.B. Yeats, “Education is not the filling of a pot but the lighting of a fire.” Dr. Parker’s not just a breath of fresh air, but a physician who’s busting through the mold and trying to change a system he feels needs changing.
